Vinotok- September 15-21, 2013

The autumn equinox, a time of balance between day and night, heralds in the celebration of Vinotok in Crested Butte, Colo. Meaning "fall wine festival" in Slovenian, Vinotok culminates on Sept. 21 after several days of celebrating and commemorates the bounty of the summer harvest and gathering of the community before the long winter ahead.

It is a time of village feasting, of forgetting the woes of yesterday and honoring traditional Eastern European roots.

Gunnison and in Colorado safer and more enjoyable. Thanks Dave!

The Dave Wiens West Elk Bicycle Classic, WEBC, was started the summer of 2012 as a fundraiser for the Western State Colorado University Mountain Sports by Dave who is the director. The Mountain sports team encompasses all the great mountain sports available at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison CO such as Cycling, Free-ride Skiing, Skier-cross, Boarder-cross and Nordic Skiing.

The Dave Wiens West Elk Bicycle Classic is a demanding 134 mile (with 100mi option) gran fondo or timed tour climbing 9,300ft (209 km, 2700m) from Gunnison to Crested Butte, CO circumnavigating the West Elk Mountains held Sunday of Labor Day weekend. The crux of the ride is a 25 mile 5400' climb over the dirt Kebler pass to Crested Butte starting at the 100 mile mark. The top of Kebler is where your time will stop for this timed event. You then will coast neutrally down to Crested Butte for the official finish and party (Donita's Cantina lunch, New Belgium beer, Third Bowl ice cream and raffle).

The roads around Gunnison and Crested Butte have been home to many races in the past. Much of our route was used in road racing in the 1970s and 80s and more recently with the US Pro Challenge stage race. We feel that our route rivals all other bicycle events in scenery, difficulty, quiet roads, and awesomeness. Check out some pictures and the course here! It also has no left turns or stop lights and only two stop signs!

Is this a race or tour? The answer is yes. In the gran fondo style, you will leave in a mass start from Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado with cyclists ranging from professional racers to recreational cyclists. You can sign up individually or bring your friends and ride as a team. Racing or seeing how fast you can go is a great way to challenge yourself. Of course just riding as a tour and trying to finish is a challenge. It's your option. Do you want to race others on a demanding course? Do you want to just tour and try to finish a demanding course? Or you can start racing and then just try to finish. We are open to all abilities, however you
should train hard-it is not easy.

We offer two distances, 100 or 134mi. The 100 mi option will start in Gunnison with the 134mi options. We think you can do the whole thing. We really do. So we want you to ride 100 miles. You have been training hard all year and if you are feeling like you want to push yourself just a bit more you can keep going. If you can't go anymore we will have a van ride to Crested Butte available at the start of the dirt on Kebler pass. The start is at 7:00am at Western State Colorado University Campus Sunday morning (See the Course Page for location).

There will be a police escort out of town and a neutral support car for the lead pack. We have six aid stations with GU products and other goodies and several SAG vehicles to ensure that you are well fed, hydrated and make the ride enjoyable if you need a little help on your way to Crested Butte, Colorado. However, the course is on remote mountain roads at high altitudes. Be PREPARED. It may rain or become very cold quickly. You should be prepared to survive if you get stuck in the rain and we can not get to you quickly.

What happens if I need help or get hurt? We will have Event Medical Solutions Unlimited on hand to get you fixed up or if you need picked up. You are in a remote setting so your safety is a high priority.

Superfly- September 6th and 7th

Superfly is the main fundraiser for Gunnison TU. We hold this contest on the first weekend after Labor Day at the Almont Resort. Money raised with Superfly helps fund youth education in Colorado via our GAS Scholarship Fund established in early 2010. The fund provides financial support for the annual Colorado TU Youth Conservation and Fly Fishing Camp. Our contributions will help to further develop the camp and provide scholarships for students.Gunnison TU Superfly Contest

Two person teams compete to see who can catch the most inches of trout in one day using the flies of their choice. Anglers fish a variety of water in the Gunnison Valley, including premier private water on the East River, Taylor River, and Gunnison River. Besides the fishing contest, the Saturday night banquet includes bucket raffles, silent auction and door prizes. The entrance fee is $600 per team. Each contestant gets a fishing shirt and cap and meals. The meals include a buffet breakfast, box lunch, and a steak barbecue dinner.

Friday night starts the fun. This is when you draw your beats (morning and afternoon) and meet your guides. Free beer and hors d’oeuvres are served. Saturday morning begins with a buffet breakfast. Then you register your flies and meet up with your guides to go fishing. Prizes are awarded Saturday night at the banquet for the top three teams, top rod, and the biggest fish. We have excellent prizes each year, including high-end fly rods that retail for as much as $800.

Superfly Rules
TEAMS
Teams will consist of two anglers. Professional guides may enter the contest, but no more than one guide will be allowed on a team. One monitor will be assigned to each team and will stay with the team for the duration of the contest.
CONTEST RULES
  1. Teams may fish anywhere they like and can work out locations with their monitor. Please take into consideration low water issues and any potential negative impact to fish. There will be no pre-assigned beats. Stocked ponds or artificial streams (irrigation ditches) are not allowed.
  2. Fishing will be between 8:30 AM and 5 PM. The first six fish caught by each contestant will be scored. Fishing for the contest will end at 5 PM or when six fish are caught by each contestant, whichever comes first.
  3. Kokanee salmon will not count in the contest. Only trout or char caught during the time allowed for the contest will be counted on the scorecard.
  4. No more than two flies may be used by each contestant during the contest. Only one fly may be used at a time (no droppers). All hooks will be barbless.
  5. All fish caught under the scoring rules must be fair hooked in the mouth (with the hook inside the mouth) and landed by the contestant, not the team partner or monitor. The team’s monitor will then measure the fish to the nearest 1/8 inch. After release, the fish will then be recorded on the individual's scorecard. All fish caught must be released safely or they will not be counted in the contest.
  6. The individual scoring the most inches for the maximum six fish allowed will be declared "TOP ROD" and the team with the most inches, "TOP TEAM." The contestant who
catches the largest fish will also be presented an award, and the fly which caught the fish will be declared the "SUPERFLY."
  7. In the event of a tie, whoever scored their first fish in the least amount of time will be the winner.
  8. The Superfly monitor for each team will be the final authority for resolving any dispute or interpretation of the rules while on the stream.
SCORING RULES
  1. The first six fish caught and landed by each contestant must be entered on the scorecard. A maximum of six fish can be scored by each angler.
  2. Once a fish has been entered on the scorecard it may not be removed.
  3. Scores must be reported in person no later than 6 PM.
  4. A 20% deduction will be applied to fish scored on private water.

Top finishers as always get a little extra prize. What else is included? With registration you will receive a water bottle, great Primal full zip Dave Wiens West Elk cycling jersey and SOS wool socks for bragging rights. We will also have a great raffle and prizes for top finishers Click here for sizing charts.

When we first decided to do this event we had to nail down a route. Over coffee with Dave Wiens, Director of Western State Colorado University Mountain Sports, and other friends our first idea was a simple out and back. While this would have been a great ride on our many great roads around Gunnison and Crested Butte, Dave said, "It's got to be epic. Let's do the West Elk Loop." Really Dave? Do you think anyone will do that? That is a long ways and it is not a trivial ride. He said, "It'll be great. There are people out there that are tough enough." And so it started. The route follows the north rim of the Black Canyon from Gunnison to Crawford and Paonia and back to a Crested Butte finish coming down Kebler pass. This is a hidden gem that sees little traffic and is full of amazing scenery.

The WEBC is not something you should do "off the couch." You should be a strong rider who has determination and won't give up.

If your significant other and family doesn’t ride, they can stay in one location in Gunnison or Crested Butte and shop, fish, raft, mountain bike, swim in our pool, rock climb, play on the largest playground slide on the west slope of Colorado or go on the zip line on Crested Butte mountain (The list goes on and on).

Are you tough enough to do this?
Last years report in the Mountain Flyer!

The Scrugglers – August 13th, 2013 $5.00 cover for Adults, kids free

Good timing, rowdy, mountain “tubgrass” from Durango, Colorado. Slaves to the bluegrass beat, bring your dancing boots, this power-trio is known to throw down for the faithful. Coming up on fours years together, the Scrugglers have become seasoned and have gained traction as a hard working, regional band of Southwest Colorado. Known as trio built around the big sound the of 2-stringed electrified washtub bass joined by banjo and mandolin.

The Scrugglers aren’t an Earl Scruggs cover band (although they do some of his material). The Scrugglers instead try to uphold a tradition of improvisation and creativity with acoustic music and especially the banjo. Part jug band, part jam band, the Scruggler’s material spans from old-time traditional to campground jam circle favorites to danceable rock and roll covers to original material.
Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with our bar & grill.  The band will start about 6:30 p.m.  Adult tickets are $5.00 and children under 18 are free.  Tickets are available only at the gate.  We have Parker Pastures burgers, Mulay’s sausage, corn, chips Luna Bakery Buns and cookies available as well.  We also serve gluten free buns and veggie burgers too.

The Empty Bottle Blues Band with Opal Moon- August 12, 2013

Come celebrate Gunnison County’s local talent! The Empty Bottle Blues Band from Crested Butte and the Opal Moon Band from Gunnison finish out the final Alpenglow of the season. Take two strong fistfuls of Freddie King and Muddy Waters. Stir them up with smatterings of the Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton. Finally, take one bottle of bourbon. Empty it. This is the spicy gumbo that is The Empty Bottle Blues Band and they will fire you up like a hot southern night from the slow rockin’ blues to the git down n’ boogie blues. The local spice is Aaron Tomcak on bass, Tommy Rudder on drums, Frank Mesiti on guitar and vocals, Tyler Lucas on guitar, and Chuck McKenrick on keyboards. The Opal Moon Band is a honky tonk and Western group playing an eclectic variety of country and western, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll. Event Details:
The Center for the Arts in Crested Butte, CO is proud to present comedian Paula Poundstone in concert Sunday, August 11th. 25 years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country -- stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went.  A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR's popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.  She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany with the Boston Globe to write: "Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy."  Audience members may put it a little less elegantly:  "I peed my pants."   While there is no doubt that Poundstone is funny, the thing that probably separates her from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd.  Poundstone says:  "No two shows I do are the same. It's not that I don't repeat material. I do.

My shows, when they're good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party. When you first get there, you talk about how badly you got lost and how hard it was to find parking. Then you tell a story about your kids or what you just saw on the news. You meet some new people and ask them about themselves.  Then, someone says, "Tell that story you used to tell," and then someone on the other side of the room spills a drink, and you mock them.  No one ever applauds me when I leave a party, though. I think they high five."
