Crested Butte Young Artist Program, August 6, 2011
Come to the Ballroom at Mountaineer Square for Marcello Giordani's Young Artist Program, sponsored by the Crested Butte Music Festival.
Opera Conductor David Syrus and the Festival Symphony Orchestra will showcase highlights from George Bizet's opera "Carmen" with participants of our "Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program" singing the roles. This will be a concert version of this years opera production and a great opportunity to hear our talented young artists.

Crested Butte Farmers' Market, August 7, 2011
Every Sunday the farmers' market will be open from 10am-2pm, and is located on 2nd and Elk Avenue. The market is always stocked fresh and full with organic and certified naturally home-grown veggies, fruit, and herbs, and pasture-raised and grass-fed meats, wild fish, and many other locally produced treats!
The market is also open at Crank's Plaza (at 5th and Maroon) on Thursdays, from 4pm-7pm.

Gunnison Valley Observatory Open for Public Viewings! August 5-6, 2011
The gates to the observatory are opened at 8:00pm, no reservations are required. A "Summer Nights Program" will be held on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer. Viewers are invited to come and enjoy a mini-lecture on a variety of interesting astronomy topics and then view the night sky through the 30" telescope and a few amateur telescopes. Suggested donation for the Summer Series is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.

This performance features our wonderful young artists in a semi-staged opera production of Bellini's "Capuleti e i Montecchi." Joined by our Festival Symphony Orchestra directed by David Syrus from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, this performance promises to be a highlight of this season. Now in it's fourth year, the Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program in Paradise has developed into one of the leading summer programs of the US.

Join Allan Ivy from 6am - 2pm on a moderate theww mile round-trip day hike and photography workshop in the mountains around Gunnison to learn the challenges of backcountry photography, including composition, lighting, and camera care!
No hiking experience is necessary, although you must be able to walk 3 miles on an up-ascending trail at a 9,000 foot elevation!

Living Journey's Summit Hike and Half-Marathon, July 30
Join us on the hike to the top of Mt. Crested Butte to raise money to provide support, education and awareness to those living with cancer. Money raised from the hike helps recipients pay medical bills and alleviate the stress of daily living expenses during their cancer treatments. The Summit Hike is hosted by Living Journeys, a non-profit organization that provides counseling services and financial assistance to Gunnison County residents giving with cancer. There are a wide variety of fitness levels for all ages. The more challenging hike is 11.5 miles round trip, but there is also a chair lift that can be ridden for 2000 vertical feet in 15 minutes, and then participants can hike for 2 miles round trip.
New this year, the Summit Hike will have a Mountain Half Marathon. The approximately 13 mile race will start at the base at 8am and will follow the jeep road uphill for approximately 4.5 miles, there will then be a 4 mile section of rolling cross country track followed by the finish back down the jeep road.

Geology and Wildflower Hike to Haseley Pass by Wednesdays at Western, July 27
Join Tom Prather, an Emeritus Professor from Western State College, for a 7 mile round-trip hike at a 2,000 foot elevation at the Schofield Park trail, through wonderful wildflower meadows. The Professor will be discussing the area's abundance and variety of wildflowers and geologic history, and there will be plenty of time to view and identify wildflowers! Don't forget to bring 1-2 liters of water, hiking footwear, dress appropriately for the weather, bring snacks, a camera, a pen and notebook, sun protection, and wildflower identification field guides.

Create Art with Unlikely Materials with Carol Connor!
From 1pm-4:30pm, July 20th, come to Western State College of Colorado to create art with Carol Connor, a studio artist who creates, exhibits, and teaches art at the Kaiser Institute's Program in Intuition and the Two World's Wisdom School. Your art will be created using a combination of recycled objects and traditional art supplies, and no experience is needed. The cost of the class is $10, and the registration deadline is July 18th!
