Crested Butte is kicking off the holiday season with a torchlight parade. The Torchlight Parade is headed up by Crested Butte Mountain Resort December 24th!

2011 Night of Lights in downtown Main Street Gunnison

December 2, 5:30pm

The theme this year will be "Ginger Bread Christmas". Main street will be closed to traffic from 5:00pm until 8:00pm and the event will begin at 5:30pm. Anything may be entered as long as it has LIGHTS. There will be food, live entertainment, and SANTA. Santa will arrive and escort families to light the community Christmas tree at 6:30pm. Crested Butte Film Festival, Gunnison & Crested Butte , Sept. 29 - Oct. 2

Films, discussions and merriment are on tap for this new festival that takes place during one of the prime leaf-viewing weekends of fall. Look for Academy Award nominees, films from Cannes and Sundance and many unknown gems. Most of the films will be Colorado premieres. 

The festival kicks off on Sept. 29 with "Sneak Peek Gunnison" with a double feature of movies showing at the Gunnison Arts Center and the Ruby Theatre, located on the campus of Western State College of Colorado. Gunnison Valley Observatory Open for Public Viewings! September 15-16

The gates to the observatory are opened at 8:00pm, no reservations are required. A "Summer Nights Program" will be held on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer. Viewers are invited to come and enjoy a mini-lecture on a variety of interesting astronomy topics and then view the night sky through the 30" telescope and a few amateur telescopes. Suggested donation for the Summer Series is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.

September Splendor in the Rockies- ALL SEPTEMBER!

September is a wonderful month to visit the Crested Butte area of Colorado. There are many activities and special event held in September, many of which can be viewed on the September Spendor in Gunnison site. A few special events include the Fall Festival of Beers & Chili Cook-off, Vinotok harvest festival, DjangoFest Colorado (gypsy jazz), MountainAir Marathon, gallery crawls, mountain biking series, a fun run and more.

Every Tuesday and Thursday there are guided Heritage Walking Tours by Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, as well as different Farmers' Markets open from Thursday through Sunday.

Gunnison Car Show, August 19-21

Come to the 24th Annual Gunnison Car Show! There are classes for originals, restored cars, and street rods, as well as motorcycles, sports cars, corevettes, mustangs, fieros, pickups and vans, and specialty cars.

Registration is $25, and all of the profits from the Car Show go to local non-profit and charitable organizations!

Rocky Mountain Bio Lab's Exploration Experience on Climate Change, July 28, 2011

The Rocky Mountain Bio Lab's Exploration Experience highlights Climate Change!

Join Dr. John Harte, author of the new book "Cool the Earth, Save the Economy; Solving the Climate Crisis is EASY," as he answers frequently asked questions about climate change. He will be visiting active research sites where RMBL scientists study the changing climate's effects on the Rocky Mountain's ecosystem!

Geology Tour of Taylor Park, Wednesdays at Western, July 13

On July 13th, 2011 travel through Taylor Canyon and Park in Gunnison, Colorado with the local geologist Bruce Bartleson to learn about the geology of the area. Discussions will center upon the glacial and structural geology of Taylor Park and why it is a large basin and how far and where glaciers extended in the region.

Make sure to bring lots of water and clothing appropriate for hiking!
