Vinotok- September 15-21, 2013

The autumn equinox, a time of balance between day and night, heralds in the celebration of Vinotok in Crested Butte, Colo. Meaning "fall wine festival" in Slovenian, Vinotok culminates on Sept. 21 after several days of celebrating and commemorates the bounty of the summer harvest and gathering of the community before the long winter ahead.

It is a time of village feasting, of forgetting the woes of yesterday and honoring traditional Eastern European roots.

Gunnison Observatory- September 13, 14, 2013

Enjoy your visit to the Gunnison Valley Observatory!

What is it? The Gunnison Valley Observatory or GVO is a publically-owned facility, managed by an all-volunteer board of directors and staffed and operated by dedicated volunteers who perform the
multitude of tasks necessary to ensure your visit is a pleasant and educational experience!

How do I get there? The GVO is located at 2804 County Road 38 – also known as Gold Basin Road - just east of the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area. To get there, drive west out of Gunnison on US Highway 50 and turn left onto Country Road 38 just before the twin bridges across the Gunnison River. There is a brown directional sign for both Hartman Rocks and the Gunnison Observatory indicating your turn. For the next 2.10 miles, stay on County Road 38 around the end of the Regional Airport runway and then head south across the valley bottom and Tomichi Creek. The Observatory will be on your left just before the housing subdivisions. You cannot see the facility from the road as it is located within an earthen berm to help shield light from the telescopes. Park in the parking lot and then walk along the graveled entry lane into the berm.

When is it open? The Observatory is open Friday and Saturday evenings for public viewing from the second week in June through the second week in September.

The GVO can also be rented by individuals or groups for private viewing on other evenings. The cost starts at $150 for the evening. Go to the GVO’s website: www.gunnisonobservatory.org for more information

Summer Speaker Series at Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum- September 5

Welcome to the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum!

Find us on Facebook.

Our next Summer Speaker Series is September 5 at 7:30pm with Barbara Mason
Read more about the Summer Speaker Series here.

The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum is now open from 10am-8pm daily.

Step back in time and experience the heritage that makes Crested Butte so distinctive at The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum.  In the center of historic Crested Butte, we have transformed "The Hardware" or "Tony's Conoco" into the town's only historic repository.

Our Museum Exhibits explore coal mining in Crested Butte from the early 1880's to the 1950's and the long history of skiing in the Gunnison Valley.  Guests can investigate everday life of "Crested Buttians" in our Home Life Exhibit and the Betty Spehar Children's Exhibit, as well as wacky, local celebrations like Flauschink.  The model town and railroad has been elected the most popular exhibit at the Crested Butte Museum, complete with distinctive buildings along Elk AvenueThe Big Mine, the Denver & Rio Grande railroad, and infamous buildings like the Old Rock Schoolhouse, Kochevar's and the Forest Queen.  And, of course, the Museum would be incomplete without the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Be sure to visit the Museum Store, featuring photo reproductions from Crested Butte's history, books, childrens' toys, garden and home decor, and gifts to please your family and friends at home.

Come sit by the potbelly stove and reminisce about the old days of Crested Butte, or recall Hardware Store merchandise from the past...we've left the shelves as they were when Tony Mihelich closed the doors.  From ceiling to floor, and everything in between, our Museum should certainly be on your list of things to do in Crested Butte.  And, our Museum is fully wheelchair accessible!
