Boston / Ithaca, NY based group, John Brown's Body, incorporates new elements of electro and dub into a foundation of roots and reggae to create a completely unique sound full of horn lines and soaring melodies. Their newest album, Amplify, (Easy Star Records) debuted in September at #1 on iTunes Reggae chart and #6 on Billboard's Reggae chart. Their new EP, JBB In Dub, was released September 11th on Easy Star Records and debuted #1 on iTunes Reggae charts and #6 on Bilboard Reggae Charts.

Gothic Mountain Tour (Formerly the Super Tour)- February 16, 2013

Here is information on the 2012 race…
The Super Tour, slated for March 17, 2012, is a race for those who like to go fast, or it can be skied as a loosely guided tour for those looking for a more relaxing pace. This 22.5k event starts at 8am at the Gothic Road trailhead in Mt. CB. The course winds out the East River to the town site of Gothic some 4.5 miles to the first checkpoint at the Maroon Hut.

From there the course heads up valley to trail 403 and then winds its way up and over to the “top of the world” above Elkton and the second checkpoint/aid station. From the “top of the world” it’s all downhill to Elkton, before cruising the last 5 miles to the finish and hot soup at the Washington Gulch trailhead.

This is a beautiful route that circumnavigates Gothic Mountain, but is a challenging ski with a steep 2000′ climb and a sometimes fast downhill. Grand Traverse racers, depending on conditions, would enjoy light gear, but most of those doing it as a tour would prefer a medium to wide touring/backcountry set-up.  Competative racers complete this course in as little as two hours; our most casual skiers ski it in about 6 hours.

• This is a backcountry course. Shovels, probes, beacons and full skins required.
• Water available at checkpoints.
• Bring your own food, water and appropriate clothing.
• COSAR cards required. Sold at CBNC.
• Mandatory turn around for those who miss Gothic checkpoint within 60 minutes.
• Event subject to cancellation due to high avalanche conditions. Fees refunded.

Glasses tinkle, friends laugh, and enticing aromas waft from the kitchen as you sit down to a gourmet meal. There’s no way to truly grasp the unique beauty of a special dinner at the Magic Meadows yurt than to experience it for yourself. Grab your friends and family, your skis or your snowshoes, and join us for one of these truly memorable dinners.

Guests ski or snowshoe out to the yurt at your own pace. The trail to the yurt is about a mile and is mostly level with a few rolling hills, taking about 30 – 45 minutes for most skiers. If you’re new to skiing, snowshoeing is a great option. If you’re unfamiliar with our trails, we can arrange for a guide to meet you at the trailhead at 5:30–just let us know if you’d like this service! We recommend all guests bring a headlamp or flashlight, and do stop by the Nordic Center ahead of time to pick up your trail passes and a map.

Body Portraits presented by Crested Butte Center for the Arts- February 7, 2013

Join local artist, Becky Chappell for a unique painting experience. Class will begin with music intended to encourage participants to quietly check in with their bodies and emotions. Students will then show what is going on in each part of their bodies by creating nonrepresentational images, using collage materials, paints, and other supplies. A relaxing, fun, and low-pressure way to get the creative juices flowing! Class will conclude with a sharing session.

Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Becky Chappell has been painting most of her life. Her mediums include oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, scratchboard; she loves it all! Her style is impressionistic and her paintings express her love of color, light and form. She spent 15 years doing scrimshaw (etching on ivory and bone). She has taught many different classes, individuals and groups. Becky loves inspiring others to realize their creativity, and encouraging others to explore with art. Becky has an Associates degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Colorado, but is more attracted to fine art than graphic design. She was Vice President of Louisville Art Association for two years and had a mural business called Living Works. For Becky, her art is life-long process of growing, learning and exploring. The Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company is a dance troupe that does more than just entertain. They elevate. Educate. Excite. The troupe declares a mission of international, cross-cultural dance arts and education rooted in African American traditions. Its mastermind is listed as a Living Legend for her work in transcribing the social issues of race, prejudice and oppression into a message of healing.

Nordic Center Showshoeing Tours

The Nordic Center rents snowshoes for $20 a day for adults, $15 a day for children and seniors, and they have top of the line demo snowshoes available for $25 a day for adults.
Snowshoers are welcome to attend the Moonlight Dinners at the Magic Meadows Yurt. Additionally, they offer guided Backcountry Snowshoe Tours.

Please call 349-1707 xt. 3 at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a tour by appointment.
