John Oates March 6th in Crested Butte

John Oates was destined to be a musician. Singing from the time he could talk and playing the guitar since the age of five, his calling in life was never in question. Born in New York City, his family moved to a small town outside of Philadelphia Pennsylvania in the early 50's.... a move that would change the course of his life. Like most kids at that time, the impact of the early days of rock left an lasting impression on John. At the age of four he witnessed his first live concert: Bill Haley and the Comets playing their classic rockabilly hits at a local amusement park. Then there were the records...

Super Tour- March 3, 2012

The Super Tour, slated for March 3, 2012, is a race for those who like to go fast, or it can be skied as a loosely guided tour for those looking for a more relaxing pace. This 22.5k event starts at 8am at the Gothic Road trailhead in Mt. CB. The course winds out the East River to the town site of Gothic some 4.5 miles to the first checkpoint at the Maroon Hut.
From there the course heads up valley to trail 403 and then winds its way up and over to the “top of the world” above Elkton and the second checkpoint/aid station. From the “top of the world” it’s all downhill to Elkton, before cruising the last 5 miles to the finish and hot soup at the Washington Gulch trailhead.
This is a beautiful route that circumnavigates Gothic Mountain, but is a challenging ski with a steep 2000′ climb and a sometimes fast downhill. Grand Traverse racers, depending on conditions, would enjoy light gear, but most of those doing it as a tour would prefer a medium to wide touring/backcountry set-up. Competative racers complete this course in as little as two hours; our most casual skiers ski it in about 6 hours.
  • This is a backcountry course. Shovels, probes, beacons and full skins required.
  • Water available at checkpoints.
  • Bring your own food, water and appropriate clothing.
  • COSAR cards required. Sold at CBNC.
  • Mandatory turn around for those who miss Gothic checkpoint within 60 minutes.
  • Event subject to cancellation due to high avalanche conditions. Fees refunded.
